This was taken around 1981 at my grandmother's studio - Dorothy Farah Dance Studio - in Asbury Park, NJ. I'm the boy in the turtleneck and I'm trying to get in touch with all the bees to recreate this photo!
My name is Kurt Braunohler. I'm a comedian from Asbury Park/Neptune, NJ. In the past I've done large-scale comedy - I paid a skywriter to write "HOW DO I LAND?" in the sky over LA. I jet-skied from Chicago to New Orleans for charity. And I once drove a giant butt across the US (ending in Asbury). This project is much more personal and intimate.
I want to find all the bees and do a photo shoot in Asbury, hopefully sometime in the summer of 2020, to recreate this photo, almost 40 years later. For no reason other than I think it would be cool. I'd also love to interview all the bees. This unique group of people who are only united by this one weird photo are a random cross-section of what it's like growing up in Central New Jersey. I'd love to meet all of you and hear your stories!
I'm note sure? But my mom died 3 years ago, and my grandma died way before that. I now live in Los Angeles with my wife and two kids. I have no connection to where I grew up anymore. I guess, in a way, this is one way to stay connected to a place that is very important to me. And it would be super stupid, and a lot of fun.
